The Village Idiots crush a team called Rack'em in the Opener |

The Village Idiots returned to the blacktop of Baldwin Park with an all-veteran squad to face the lowly team, Rack'em, in what served as a perfect warm-up game to shake off some rust that has built up since falling short in the Lynbrook Winter League. As usual, the Idiots defense was very intense, with Tim Byrnes and Fred Paul harassing the opposing guards right off the bat. However, even in their seventh season on the Baldwin Park blacktop, the V.I. took a while to get re-aquainted with the high, uneven rims, and the baskets were hard to come by in the early going... but with Rack'em unable to take advantage of the Village Idiots' slow start, the V.I. solid defense and crisp ball movement eventually opened the floodgates, and they led 31-11 at the half... a very even distribution of scoring along the way. Not much changed in the second half. Rack'em showed less and less basketball ability, and the Idiots continued to operate a well-balanced offense and executed simple zone defense that stifled their opponents on the other end. When it was all said and done, the Idiots finished off their first win of the season at 59-21. Tim Byrnes and Tom Casal led four double-digit scorers with 11 a piece. Matt Shiels and Dan Knipscher added 10 each. Byrnes rounded out an impressive stat-line with 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. The Village Idiots play next Monday at 7:30 against rivals Kasey's.
