Village Idiots Enter the Urban Pro League |

The Village Idiots made their debut in the Manhattan-based Urban Professionals League on Tuesday, Dec 6th. Donned in brand new V.I. black long sleeves, they were noticed immediately as one of the referees noted... "I've been workin' this league for ten years, and ain't never seen no warm-up jerseys!" After the sharp looking warm-ups were removed, the first indoor Village Idiot basketball game began... As was the case in their 2000 debut, the V.I. were pitted against a team of crafty veterans who had been playing together in the league for a few years now. Still unfamiliar with the new mesh of talent, the Idiots struggled out of the box and found themsleves in a 30-19 halftime deficit. A solid regroup at the half, and the bonus of shooting on the more well-lit hoop fueled a second half run. V.I. rookie George the Greek continued his phenomenal shooting, adding four second-half threes to match his total for the first half, including a key banked-in triple to keep the V.I. close with a few minutes to go. Unlike in the first 25 minutes, where the Greek was the only one to find offensive success, this time he was joined by V.I. co-founder DKnip who fired in four of his own from long range. The double-threat from deep was combined with a defensive ambush on the tiring opponents, and the lead was all-but erased when the clock showed 40 seconds to go. Down by only a single point now, the Idiots sent their opponents to the line where they missed the first and hit the second to leave the score at 53-51 with about half-a-minute left... With a timeout remaining, the Greek led the charge up the court, was quickly doubled and handed off to DKnip, who raised a three-ball that rimmed out... fortunately, youth prevailed on the scramble for the rebound and after great efforts by V.I. bangers Street and the Chairman to keep the ball alive, the Greek came up with the looseball and the final timeout was called with 17 ticks on the clock. Needing a two to tie and a three to win, the ball was inbounded and quickly found its way into the Greek's hands in hopes of him finding the room to launch what would surely be a game winner... however, the defensive intentions were clear as 2 and then 3 men attacked as George tried to shake loose with the dribble to no avail... instead, Pauly Beamer, who had been making key plays around the hoop all night found himself with ball in hand, 25 feet from the hoop with just a few precious ticks left... He had yet to launch a long-ball all night, but he took a dribble to his right and got the shot off as time expired... a high arcing toss would now determine the fate of the Idiots... and in this case, that fate was VICTORY, as the ball splashed through for the 54-53 win! A great start to a new season!!! Stay tuned for frequent updates, as the Urban Professionals League has just gotten started...
