Fall '06 - Playoffs |
For the second week in a row, the Idiots found themselves facing another Sunday doubleheader opening with a matchup against RC Dugans... this time, however, elimination would be the penalty for losing. The V.I. came out gunning on offense and BStan threw two long TDs to TWebs on consecutive drives to give the Idiots the 12-7 lead which they held going into halftime. After falling behind in the second half, BStan implemented the running game and dashed in for a rushing TD behind big blocks by Taylor, Pauly and some fine pancaking by Danny Morgan! DRye sealed the victory with an interception to shut down Dugans last attempt at a comeback and BStan put a little icing on the cake by taking advantage of a depressed Dugans defense who let him scoot into the endzone for his second score of the day... the V.I. moves on with a 25-13 victory! ... They didn't have much time to dwell on their triumph as they were thrown right back on the field to play the undefeated #1 seed Tornados. In one of the most competitive games of the year, the teams battled back and forth as neither could gain a clear advantage. DRye opened the scoring with a great catch, but the Tornados led 14-6 going into the half. In the 2nd, Oscar sprinted past the defense after grabbing a quick slant from BStan and took it 45 yds into the endzone to pull the V.I. within 2. It looked like the Tornados were going to stretch their lead when TWebs picked off a ball in the endzone and ran it back past mid-field. Three plays later, Oscar took a toss sweep and followed the big boys up front across the goal line to put the Idiots up 18-14 with under 2 minutes to play. On their ensuing drive the Tornados took advantage of a defensive gamble as BStan was inches away from picking off a quick out that turned into a 50 yd TD reception and put the V.I. behind 20-18 with 1:30 left. A kickoff out of bounds gave the Idiots the ball on the 40-yd line and they needed to conquer only half the field to get the score and pull the upset. Three downs went by quickly and after a second consecutive intentional grounding penalty, it was 4th and long with the season on the line and the clock ticking down. BStan scrambled from the pocket and danced around defenders as the V.I. receivers fought to get open. With the rush collapsing in on him, he spotted DRye sneaking upfield and tossed the ball his way. Unfortunately, the pass flew just past the outstretched arms and the Idiots' season was over. But, the team that showed up for this final doubleheader promises to bring the excitement next Spring!
