Fall '06 - Game 3

The Village Idiots had another noon contest this past sunday vs. an old rival, the L.I. Hurricanes. After a night of tending bar, the extra couple hours of sleep served TWebs well as he scored his 5th TD of the young season on the opening drive, collecting a 25 yd strike from BStan to give the V.I. the early lead. The Canes answered back with a pair of slow methodical drives to put them up 14-7 at the half.

In a back and forth battle, TWebs became the all-time TD leader for the V.I. with two second half scores. Dusting the Hurricanes secondary on a 45-yd grab to tie Fred Fribble's career total of 32, and then returning an interception 41-yards to break the mark and put the Idiots within 2 points of the lead.

The Hurricanes ensuing drive ate away at the clock and the officiating ate away at the nerves of both-sides as the referees essentially stole money from the teams by missing calls and even blatantly ignoring rules.

A wild finish was facilitated even further when the Canes, still up by 2, were awarded a first down inside the V.I. 5 yd line with under a minute to go. Rather than run out the clock, and preserve the win, they accepted the Idiots' open invitation to march the ball across the goal line and left the V.I. one last chance to block the extra point and try a comeback with 42 seconds left. Sure enough, a bad snap by the Hurricanes' coach/longsnapper/sunglasses model led to a flubbed kick and the BStan had 42 seconds to put 8 points on the board to send the game to OT.

Having two timeouts remaining, the V.I. exposed an undefended middle of the field by getting the ball to DKnip on three quick hits, the last of which left the ball on the 20 yd line with 6 seconds to go. After a pump to the middle again, BStan found Oscar in the end-zone as the clock ran out to pull the score to 27-25. Unfortunately, the two-point pass attempt was batted down and the game ended in a two-point loss for the Idiots. The action returns to Cow Meadow Park again next Sunday at 10:30am against RC Dugans.
