V.I. Struggles early but comes back against Holy Name |
||||||
After smooth sailing on opening night, the Village Idiots had a very slow start against last year's semi-final victim, Holy Name. A stale shooting touch and some poor fundamentals under the glass left the Idiots trailing by 13 points in the first quarter. Some good news from the early stages came when Tom Casal finally ended his games without a technical foul streak that dated back to last season... good to see the fire is back, TC! The VI collectively got their heads on straight by the half-time break and started to chew into the 24-16 halftime deficit, led by some tough defensive guard play by Fred Paul and Tim Byrnes. A few key old-fashioned three-point plays by Casal and the Harrison brothers were matched by a couple threes from behind the arc by Fred Fribble. Things went back and forth in the waning minutes until a final surge by the Idiots pushed the momentum in their favor and the worn out Holy Name squad could do nothing about it. With their foes left frustrated and tired, the Idiots punched in a few last second buckets to stretch the final to 46-39 in a game that was close for all but the last minute. Fred Paul led with 15 points and Greg Harrison notched 8 points and 7 rebounds for the VI. It should also be mentioned that a fine post-game tailgate was organized by Tom Weber and some delicious Burgers, Dogs and Sausages were polished off along with a remarkablly healthy serving of Coors Light... while the Idiots were enjoying the victory spoils, they were taken by surprise when the usually informal 11pm Baldwin Park closing time was strictly enforced on this night... moments from using Chris Harrison's Honda Accord as a battering ram, the late night crew saved the straggling Idiots by unlocking the gates just before things went too far... we'll be sure to take that 11:00 curfew more seriously next Monday... see you then!
