Idiots Pull Off Late Victory Shorthanded |

Playing shorthanded with only 5 players and 2 fill-ins that barely played, the Village Idiots won their 11th straight game thanks to guard Freddie Paul's free throw with 7 seconds left for the 55-54 victory. The V.I. had to play with what they had this past Monday night but that didn't matter. Johnny Cakes came out on fire in the first half and seemed to hit every three-pointer they put up. A tired and stunned V.I. team trailed 28-19 at halftime due in part to scoring only 5 points in the 2nd quarter.
The Johnny Cakes started the 2nd half like they played in the 1st half hitting big and sometimes lucky shots to build their lead as high as 11. Then the V.I. woke up and turned up the man-to-man defense. Forward Matty Shmeils hit a three-pointer and got to the line often hitting 5 of 6 from the line to help the Idiots get back into the game. Along with Shiels (14 points, 9 rebounds), center Greg Harrison and forward Tom Casal (11 rebounds) controlled the offensive boards in the quarter en route to a 23 point quarter to cut the JC lead to 44-42 after 3. The V.I. continued their tight man-to-man D all 4th quarter and seemed to frustrate Johnny Cakes. The Idiots missed several easy baskets which kept the game close but hit them when it counted. With the V.I. holding onto a 3 point lead, they had a chance to put them away on the foul line. After a missed V.I. foul shot, Johnny Cakes got the ball down court with the score keeper screaming down the seconds. Then they hit one more key three-pointer to tie the game at 54 with 36 seconds left. The Idiots came down killing some clock and holding out for one last shot. Then Freddie Paul drove towards the basket he was fouled and sent to the line for a 1 & 1 with 7 seconds left. The Village Idiots got out their Fribulator and Freddie hit the first free-throw to put the V.I. up one, 55-54. Freddie missed the second and JC had one last shot with 5 seconds left but could not get a shot off and the Idiots were victorious. The Village Idiots improve to 5-0 on the season with 2 regular season games left. Tom Casal led all scorers with 18 points and Matt Shiels had season high 14 points. The V.I. out rebounded Johnny Cakes all game and Tommy Weber even helped the cause with a career high 4 rebounds. As impressive as Weber's 4 boards were, Center Greg Harrison (12 points) set a new V.I. record with 20 rebounds.
