"In the words of one of my good friends, you're all a bunch of alcoholics!" Those were the words of a Baldwin Park supervisor after Monday night's victory as the Village Idiots celebrated in the parking lot. The heavy rain and lightning came but Forwards Tom Casal, Matt Shiels, center "Mighty" Joe Young, guard Tom Weber and newly acquired statistician Tom Stanley(VI football) braved the storm to polish off the beers. It was a sign that the V.I. dedication is still alive and they're ready to defend the 2005 title. The Idiots started off slow in the 1st quarter but outscored Holy Name 18-7 in the 2nd quarter for a 33-20 halftime advantage. Back from his short stint on the volleyball circuit, a bloody Joe Young delayed the start of the 2nd half. Sloppy play and several turnovers helped Holy Name to outscore the V.I. 16-7 in the 3rd quarter, but the V.I. still had a 40-36 lead heading into the 4th and final stanza. The V.I. got off to a quick start in the 4th and quickly built on their lead. Fred "The Fribulator" Paul had all of his 6 points in the final quarter as he finally found his touch on the layup line. The Idiots played a smart 4th running out some clock and scoring almost everytime down the court. Although the final score looks close, Holy Name was barely in the game down the stretch and the Village Idiots continued their winning ways with a 60-54 victory. Tom Casal led all scorers with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Newly acquired center Greg Harrison had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks to hold down the middle. Tim Byrnes, who signed a full-time V.I. contract in the off-season, played well and finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. PO Greg Gormsen continued to show his range and hit the first 3-pointer for V.I. this summer. The Village Idiots play next Monday at 7:30 against rivals Kasey's.
