The V.I. Ends the Season with only 5 Men Standing

The Village Idiots headed to their first indoor playoff game with another short-handed group. Although all 5 who showed up were used to wearing the V.I. all season, the Idiots were left without their top three scorers for this contest.

The opponents were the familiar Dukes squad that had sent the Idiots into this predicament by handing them their 4th loss of the season this past Monday and dropping them to the 5-seed. The Dukes, however, came with a bolstered attack as compared to Monday, adding two more to the depth of their bench.

From the beginning, it was clear, the Idiots were going to be put to the test. The Dukes' spaced offense and passing attack wore down the V.I. legs and ran out to an early 13-3 lead. The Idiots made the adjustment to a zone defense and shook the cobwebs off their shooting touch just in time to bounce back and knot the score at 16. The Dukes did not let the momentum swing takeover and managed to preserve a lead going into halftime at 24-20.

The second half remained fairly even throughout, with each team struggling to put together a run of successful offensive sequences. On the Idiots' side, the harrassing defense of Pauly Beamer and TWebs was only amplified by the Chairman and the Aceman smothering the wings and DKnip clogging the middle. However, it was clear the Idiots were beginning to feel the effects of an empty bench, as the effort involved in making key defensive stops tooks its toll on their shooting legs. Some big shots that have consistently fallen in the Julia Richman complex, did not go through, as the V.I. were left to play catchup in the final minutes. The result was an end to the Village Idiots' season as they were left on the short side of the low-scoring affair, 42-37.

Plagued by attendance issues all year, this team should be back next season with a very imposing squad. It was a fun ride, and we look forward to more V.I. action in the Urban Pro League!

Now, the Village Idiots Sportsworld turns to BeerPong as big things are happening that will certainly keep us entertained until this Summer, when the V.I. World Cup Tailgating Tour in Germany will kick off a wild season.
