  • VI Softball Wins 1st League title!!! Bababooey MVP!!!

By VI Sports Insider | September 17, 2010

vi-baseball-website.jpgThe Village Idiots were founded back in 2000 when they were just an unknown group of guys that have known each other since grade school.  In 2000 they formed the first ever basketball team and joined the LIFFL (flag football) and struggled early on.  Since then, the Idiots flag football team has made a name for themselves making the playoffs almost every season and made a few championship appearances but failed to come away with a title.  The VI basketball team is currently a powerhouse in the Town of Hempstead league and even expanded into the NYC Urban Pro league.  The NYC team, in their 6th season together, won their first title this past summer.  The Idiots are three-time champions in the Town of Hempstead league and finished in 2nd place this past summer (second runner-up finish) in their 10th season together.  Then in 2007, the Idiots formed their first softball team and it wasn’t easy in the beginning.  With little dedication from half the roster, a VI Summer Jam scheduled in the middle of season, and some inexperience on the diamond, the Idiots finished a dismal 4-12.  The Village Idiots softball organization was the laughing stock of the VI franchise, but time has changed and its the softball squad taking over the headlines.

Wednesday night the Village Idiots softball team won their first ever league title by winning a best of three series over the #1 seed JBop in the Long Beach Recreation summer league.  This past spring the Idiots also won their first tournament title making the 2010 softball season a GREAT SUCCESS and will go down as one of the best VI years to date.

On a perfect night for softball, the #2 seeded Idiots wasted little time showing that they belonged in the finals.  In the top of the 1st inning the VI jumped out to a 5-0 lead.  Tom Casal’s three-run homer and Matt Shiels’ solo shot highlighted the big inning for the Idiots.  JBop got two runs in the bottom half to keep it close but after a scoreless second inning, the VI blew open the game in the third by rallying to score seven runs to take a 12-2 lead.  Five different Idiots drove in a run in the inning, including manager/catcher/motivational speaker Pete Allocco’s two-run homer over the rightfield fence.  The VI never looked back and went on to win game one 16-9.  Pitcher Roy “Bababooey” Vaccaro was sharp all game and VI veteran Danny Hansen went 4 for 4 (including an infield single) in the victory.

After stealing game one, the Iditos were the home team for game two and had momentum on their side.  All that momentum was taken away after JBop came out fired up scoring 11 runs in the first two innings to lead 11-2 after two.  Joe Wesselhoft’s three-run homerun and Shiels’ RBI single cut the defecit to 11-6 after three innings.  Each team traded 3 runs in the fourth inning and after scoring four more runs in the 6th inning, JBop cruised to a 18-10 win forcing the all decisive game 3.

Knowing they needed to come out of the gates fast, the Idiots did just that in game 3.  The VI bats were hot and they reeled off five runs in the first inning, four in the second, and added one more in the third to go up 10-0 after the 3rd inning.  After Wesselhoft drove in leadoff batter Tom Stanley to go up 1-0, Steve Esposito crushed a grand-slam in the first inning.  Vaccaro Jr. also joined the homerun party after finally switching bats, Roy smoked a ball to left-center for a solo shot in the 3rd.  Vaccaro was also red hot on the mound, limiting his mistakes and the defense behind him was very solid.  Even though the bats cooled off for the VI, Vaccaro only gave up three runs through seven innings and the Idiots went on to win game three 10-3.  Esposito drove in five runs to lead the Idiots and Stanley went 4 for 4 with two runs scored in the win.  Vaccaro was named by his teammates as World Series MVP and the post-game celebration went on to early Thursday morning!!!

    BabaBooey-at-Ricks

Congratulations to all the Idiots for their historic 2010 season and the organization will like to thank the special fans that came to support the VI throughout the season!

Week 3 games of the week

    By J Dubs | September 16, 2010

Hello ALL!  J-DUBS is ready to bring you the top games of the week.. Hopefully Allocks, Fancy Man Mystery Reporter and Dr Ron join in this week.  Pickens are slim this time around so lets get to it…

Arkansas @ Georgia - This is the First test of the season for Mallet and Arkansas to see if they can live up to the hype.  GA has been menza menz the past 2 years.  But they are home.  Mallett and the Hogs get the W here.

UConn @ Temple - AN INTERESTING match up.  J-Dubs made a bold prediction that the Owls would finish the season in the top 25.  Offense and defense both look pretty average thus far.  UConn had a crushing blow with a blowout loss to Michigan.. My heart says owls but like a Man I won’t let my emotions get the best of me.  Maybe I will. TEMPLE IN A CLOSE ONE!  -BOOOM Bold all the way!

Ga Tech @ UNC - This is a big one for the ACC.  UNC gets their RB back.  Ga Tech is looking to bounce back.  It’s at UNC.  I like UNC here….

TX @ Texas Tech - SHOOTOUT IN TEXAS.  I like Texas to pick up a W here.

IOWA @ AZ - Only 2 ranked opponents who place each other this week.  This a dangerous game  for Iowa.. Long trip for Iowa.  I Like em here though.  Iowa stays on track with a win…

You’re not a Sports Blog unless you have a pic of Ines Sainz at Jets Practice…

    By DanKnip | September 13, 2010

    So, here you go…

    Ines-Sainz-Jets-Practice

In case you don’t know why she’s of interest to anything but your eyes…

(AP) The NFL is looking into how a female television reporter was treated at New York Jets practice Saturday.
Ines Sainz, a reporter for Mexico’s TV Azteca doing a story on quarterback Mark Sanchez, had footballs thrown in her direction by a Jets coach during practice, and players later called out to her in the team’s locker room.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Sunday that the league and the Jets began looking into the situation when they were made aware of it Saturday night.

Sainz tweeted in Spanish that she felt “very uncomfortable!” and that she was in the Jets locker room waiting to interview Sanchez while trying “not to look anywhere!!” Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum called Joanne Gerstner, a board member of the Association for Women in Sports Media, on Sunday to discuss the matter. The two organizations were working to schedule an educational and awareness session with the team, according to Jets spokesman Bruce Speight.
Speight added that he also addressed the situation at the team meeting Sunday in advance of New York’s season opener against Baltimore on Monday night at the New Meadowlands Stadium.
Sainz, a former pageant queen contestant, is known for stealing the show at media day events, according to the Bleacher Report.
Earlier Sunday, the Jets issued a statement, saying owner Woody Johnson spoke to Sainz on Sunday to discuss the incident.
“He stressed to Ines that he expects all members of the Jets organization to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times,” the statement said.
The team also said it would work with the league to gather facts and “take any appropriate steps necessary to maintain a respectful environment for the media.”
The AWSM said in a statement Sunday night that both the NFL and the Jets were “responsive to our concerns” and that it would continue to monitor the situation.
“We are awaiting the results of the investigation,” the statement read, “and further action from the NFL and Jets.”

And, just in case you read none of that and still scrolled down here… we don’t judge…

    This week’s top 10 - College football

    By J Dubs | September 13, 2010

What 10 things did week 2 teach us???  Well it taught me a couple of things.

#1.  OSU and Bama are clearly correct in their rankings of 2 and 1 respectively.

#2 Denard Robinson should be considered a Heisman candidate.

#3 Va Tech is clearly ALWAYS the most overrated team in college football during the preseason rankings.  What’s horrendous is they can still win the ACC!!!!

#4 The Big 10 is youthful and talented (minus Minn).

#5 The ACC is talented and not that well coached.

#6 Division 1A needs to not overlook the Football subdivision teams any longer (Minn, Va Tech, Ole Miss - who’s next).

#7 Marcus Lattimore of South Carolina is a game changer and by the end of the season could be if healthy could create heisman buzz himself and could have USouth Carolina in the running for the SEC Title.  HE IS A BEAST!!.

#8 - TPryor looks really good and really average at times.  But the throws a pretty deep ball.

#9 THE ACC STINKS - all but 1 of the 6 ranked ACC teams lost their game and if it were not for the last second win at Might Marshall they would have been 0-6!!!  Only 2 of those losses came to a ranked opponents.  And the games were only close for 1 half of those games.  NOT GOOD.

#10 PSU is very young but there is talent!

10a.  The Mystery reporter needs to get on his game.  No picks in 2 weeks and comes on here running his trap.  Now in a conversation this past friday he told me he agreed with each of my picks.  So I am willing to give him a 4-1 record this week.  But because of his lack of participation he should get a 1 game penalty to give him a 3-2 record this week.  I don’t even know what to say or do about week#1.  But one thing is for certain, the Mystery Report has been mysteriously absent.  And this prognositcator wonders if M.R. has what it takes to Pick games in the first place.  Its not all puppy dogs and Ice cream FANCY MAN!!!

PLAYOFFS!?!?!?! VI Softball goes for Long Beach title!

By VI Sports Insider | September 9, 2010

    playoffs

The Village Idiots are playoff bound for the first time in VI softball history.  Coming off of their first tournament title this past spring, the Idiots will be looking to add some more hardware to the mantle.  This summer the VI finished with a 12-4 record which was good enough for a second place finish.  JBop finished in first place with a 14-2 record.  As the #2 seed, the VI got a first round bye and will play their semi-final games on Tuesday, September 14th.  The best of three game series begins at 7:00pm on Field 3 at the Long Beach Recreation center.  The semi-final winners will then play the following night, Wednesday (9/15), in another best of three series to crown a champion.

The Idiots are hoping their faithful supporters will come down and cheer for them on their way to VI History!!

    PICK EM week 2

    By J Dubs | September 8, 2010

FSU @ OKLA - So many story lines.  Stoops vs Stoops.  Fisher’s first big game.  The keys are the stories on the field.  Landry Jones looked very average against Utah State.  As did their defense.  FSU wants to get into the national championship picture here.  I like an UPSET.  FSU goes to norman and picks up a Win!!

Mich @ ND - Not sure what to think here.  I know one thing this will be a SHOOTOUT.  Denard Robinson looked like a player on another level against what was supposed to be a strong UConn defense last week.  RichRod might have found something here.  ND is still slow on defense and will be starting 6 true freshman.. Talented an young spells trouble in a game like this.  I like Michigan in this one.

Ore @ Tenn - Tenn does not have the talent here. Look for oregon to come in and beat them soundly..  Oregon by at least 2 scores

MIA @ OSU - This is gonna be a good one.  I think Miami is as talented as they have been in years.  They have a GREAT QB in Harris and are talented and fast on offense and Defense.  OSU has a CHALLENGE on their hands…  Pryor is a legit heisman candidate and OSU has all the pieces..  I just don’t see Miami walking into the horseshoe and taking this one.  OSU in a nailbiter.

PSU @ BAMA - 2 of my FAVORITE college football programs do battle.  PSU is young.  Strong DL.  Strong Running game.  Bama is missing their best DL and their heisman trophy winner.  But the Tide are LOADED at RB, WR, OL, LB, DB.  I expect that to be enough to win a close one at Bryant-Denny Stadium.  Bama by 13 in tuscaloosa

GAMES OF THE WEEK- week 2

    By J Dubs | September 8, 2010

So the Mystery reporter showed up a week late and now he can get in the game instead of letting another tough week go by. Week 2 has some marquee matchups that will go a long way in shaping the college football landscape this season.  Last week we saw STRONG performances out of the BIG 10 and the WAC.  The non-BCS schools made themselves known and groups like the Big East were served and put on notice.  This week those conferences look to turn things around.

FSU @ OKLA - OKLA survived a scare last week!!  They didn’t look good on offense.  Defensively they looked suspect.  FSU took care of business and Jimbo Fisher is looking for his first big name victory as the HEAD coach of FSU

Mich @ ND - Richrod wants to prove that the statement made against UConn last week was no fluke.  ND and coach Kelly want to get that first big win of the new Era in ND

Ore @ Tenn - No Masoli same offense for the ducks.  Preseason they were a favorite to win the Pac-10 and are out to prove this game is a team sport.  Tenn is youthful and talented and trying to find an identity after that past 4 years of headaches at Rocky top

MIA @ OSU - HUGE GAME.  Miami wants to prove they are back and a national Power.  OSU want to prove they belong in the national championship game this season.  This game will go a long way in proving that.

PSU @ BAMA - BIG GAME pick of the week 1A.  Because MIA/OSU IS HUGE ALSO.  The defending national champs have their Heisman winner and top DL and national championship game MVP missing for this one.  PSU has a solid DL and is talented at WR and RB.  Unproven at QB and OL.

    College Football…. SBS!!!!

    By Mystery Reporter | September 7, 2010

As my colleague J-Dubs found out this week picking winners in College football is not a job for amatuers!!!!The self proclaimed guru of the bold & sexy picks went 1-4 last week and I think it’s time for the pro to start picking again.

We had a great week to kickoff the college football season. Boise State - Virginia Tech was a great one! Here are some of my observations from week #1….  Picks to come later on this week.

The SEC is not the same powerhouse that it has been in the last few years (outside of Bama). Ole Miss loses to a 1-AA team, LSU squeaks by the backups at UNC and Florida looked awful. Bama will roll through the SEC this year.

Michigan got my attention this weekend. Looks like RichRod found his QB…. The Big Ten just got a whole lot tougher.

The Mountain West conference is legit again… Utah over top 25 Pitt, TCU over top 25 Oregon State and BYU over Washington. SBS!!!

How about a shout out to local long island school Stony Brook. They hung tough with South Florida for a quarter.

Virginia Tech and Tyrod Taylor are much better than I expected and the ACC is going to have a bounce back year. Florida State, Miami could make noise this week.

Big Games that I will be predicting later on this week… ND vs. Michigan, OSU vs. Miami, FSU vs. Oklahoma, PSU vs. Bama, Oregon vs. Tennessee and a plus one game.

    Shape up J-Dubs!!!
