Five Homeruns Power Idiots to Victory
By VI Sports Insider | May 11, 2010
Everybody hates Monday’s, but the Village Idiot softball team has loved Monday nights and for the second straight week the VI put up a bunch of runs for another run-rule win. The Idiots were excited to get into last night’s game after a hot start to the season in the previous week and that they’d be playing against their rival, Swingbelly’s. They did play Swingbelly’s but the scouting reports were incorrect, Swingbelly’s has two teams in the division and the Idiots were playing the other team. “It doesn’t matter who we play!” second baseman Tom Stanley and outfielder Chris Lang repeatedly said before the matchup. This past Monday night it did not matter because the way the Idiots tore the cover off the ball not many teams could have stopped them. The Village Idiots hit a team record five homeruns in the game and each Idiot in the lineup had at least one RBI in the 21-9 win in just five innings.Steve Esposito got the start for the VI on the mound thanks to number one starter Roy Vaccaro being his normal self and showing up late. Esposito has plenty experience and despite some early control problems managed to escape the first inning scoreless. The Idiots then exploded for seven first inning runs to give Esposito plenty of breathing room and helped him settle down. After missing the opener due to a hip injury, shortstop Tom Casal got them on the board first with an RBI single. Matt Shiels and Petey “Granola” Allocco (4 RBI) then drew back to back bases loaded walks to bring in two more runs. Maybe a little upset about his tardiness, Vaccaro took it out on Swingbelly’s in his first at bat. With the bases juiced, Vaccaro hit a deep shot to centerfield for a grand slam to start the power surge for the Idiots.
After Swingbelly’s cut the deficit to 7-3 the VI answered right back with three runs of their own in the second inning. Casal, Vaccaro, and Dan Knipscher drove in a run each in the short rally. Swingbelly’s kept chipping away and managed to score two runs a piece in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings for a total of 9. Unfortunately for them the Idiots scored eleven more runs in those same innings for a grand total of 21, just enough to run-rule them after five innings.
Joe Wesselhoft’s two-run homer and Allocco, after a quick granola bar break, hit a 3-run shot over the right-field fence and off the factory to highlight a eight-run third inning. In the fourth inning Esposito and Lang led off with back-to-back solo homers for the Idiots and then Steve Studley’s sacrifice fly in the fifth would be all the VI would need for the 21-9 victory. Wesselhoft, Knipscher and Vaccaro had three hits apiece and the Bababooey led all Idiots with 5 RBI’s. ![]()
The Village Idiots look to make it three Monday night wins in a row next week when they take on the Beach House at 9:30pm next Monday. In their only matchup last season, the Idiots scored five runs in the 7th inning and Casal’s walk-off homerun gave them a 21-20 win. The Idiots will also be in action next Wednesday (5/19) for their second game of the week at 7:00pm against Sutton Place. The V.I. also won the only matchup between them and Sutton Place. The 7:00pm start should lead to a couple of hours of post-game tailgating, what the Village Idiots do best!GET YOUR STATS AND BOXSCORES AT WWW.LEAGUELINEUP.COM/VILLAGEIDIOTS
