Bats come to life as Idiots open season with Big Win!

By VI Sports Insider | May 4, 2010

wess Unknown to the press, two weekends ago the Village Idiots played in the annual Ed Smith tournament in Long Beach for the second straight season.  There was not much to report as the V.I. once again failed to win any of their 3 games and advance.  This Monday night they opened their regular season and thanks to an inspirational pregame speech from manager Petey Allocco, the V.I. bats exploded for 25 runs in four innings for the 25-1 win over LB SOB.

Fresh off of Allocco’s pep-talk, the Idiots wasted no time and put up 12 runs in the first inning.  Just three batters in, Tommy Weber got them going with a 3-run homer for the early lead.  Roy Vaccaro, Dan Knipscher (4 for 4) and Steve Studley added RBI singles and just after a Steve Esposito strikeout, VI rookie Chris Lang hit a 3-run homerun over the right-center field fence to make it 9-0.  A few batters later first-baseman Joe Wesselhoft hit a two-run single and would then score on Matt Shiels’ RBI single making it 12-0 Idiots after one.The hot hitting continued in the second as Lang went deep for a second time with another 3-run homer to the opposite field.  Wesselhoft would keep pace with Lang as hit his second two-run single to pump the lead up to 17-0.  The rally would be cut short when Allocco struck out after putting the previous pitch foul over the fence and on a rooftop.  Despite the at bat the manager was happy that his Idiots were up 17-0 after just two innings. With the game getting close to a run-rule, LB SOB had no life left in them and only was able to touch Vaccaro for one run.  Vaccaro was sharp on the mound and with his glove as he ended on SOB threat turning a nice double play with shortstop Tom Stanley.  The Village Idiots would really put the game out of reach in the top of the 4th and it could have been a lot worse.  The first seven batters all reached safely in the inning and despite just running the bases one at a time, they still were able to score 8 more runs.  After another 1-2-3 inning pitched by Vaccaro (1-0, 2.25 ERA) the Idiots cruised to a 25-1 victory.

webLang continued to impress in his rookie season as he drove in six runs with his two homeruns, scored four runs, and fouled out for a K.  Wesselhoft led the Idiots with 6 RBI’s with Stanley and Weber (4 RBI) setting the table in front of him going a combined 8 for 8 with 8 runs scored.  The Village Idiots next game is Monday, May 10th at 9:30pm against Swingbelly’s Bar & Grill.  There is a small rivalry building between these teams as Swingbelly’s beat the Idiots in the Ed Smith tournament a few weeks back and last season the VI handed Swingbelly’s their first loss of the season with a 12-11 comeback win.  Monday Night Softball should have plenty of fireworks!
