Recently, Bobby Bowden spurred some controversy by stating his belief that former Seminole QB Charlie Ward was a better college football player than current Florida QB, Tim Tebow.

Here’s a piece of that conversation:

Bowden suggests Ward was better than Tebow

Some college football followers believe Florida’s Tim Tebow is the greatest player in history, but one of the game’s legendary coaches thinks Tebow may not be the best quarterback to play in Florida in the last 20 years.

Asked Tuesday who was the greatest player he’s ever coached at Florida State, Bobby Bowden named 1993 Heisman-winner Charlie Ward with little hesitation, according to the Orlando Sentinel. He then mentioned how often people ask him if Tebow is the best ever.

“People keep asking me about Tebow,” Bowden said, according to the Sentinel. “I don’t know if he’s better than Charlie. I don’t think he runs better than Charlie. I don’t think he throws better than Charlie. And Charlie only played [quarterback] two years for us.”

We ask you …what do you think???

This isn’t the first time I have seen this. The numbers don’t always tell the tail. If it did people would probably say that Ty Detmer should also be mentioned.. that said, I can see what Bowden is saying. For what CWard did at the time it was one of the greatest college football performances in history. And at the time he could have been considered one of the best collegiate football players of ALL Time… BUT things have changed. Numbers are inflated. Players are bigger fast stronger.

But I have said and still say that Tebow is the best Qb in college football.

If he takes them to another national title this season, then he probably could and SHOULD be known as the best ever. But right now I think it’s up for debat….

Also there is a HUGE difference in media coverage from when Charlie Ward played to now with Tebow. You have the internet boom, all those websites, ESPN its 90 channels, etc. So there is a lot more coverage today vs. then, that has something to do with the hype surrounding Tebow.
