All is Right With the World - VI Back in 1st Place

The Village Idiots took to the court last night facing an unfamiliar scenario. In past seasons, it was always other teams trying to knock off the First Place VI. Yesterday it was the Idiots trying to reclaim the top spot from the Hit Squad. Again the Idiots were going without some key guys but the 6 that showed up were determined to put the team back atop the standings.
Going into the game the Idiots seemed to have a size advantage and planned to take advantage of that in the 1st quarter. As usual John Wassenbergh and Tommy Casal would prove to be huge for the VI and set the tone early. Hit Squad had no answer for them down low and a wide array of post moves gave the big men on the other side fits. VI took an early lead but the Hit Squad was undeterred. With there point guard and swing men hitting a few big threes, the Hit Squad built a 3 point lead at the end of the 1st.
The 2nd quarter began with the VI getting back into the game thanks to their efforts on the defensive end. The Idiots put the clamps down with their vaunted 2-3 defense and forced the Hit Squad into many poor shots. Trash talking on both sides almost led to a comedy show instead of a basketball game but cooler heads prevailed. When the refs finally got the game back under the control Frank the Tank provided a huge spark knocking down a big jumper and strong drive which knotted the score at 28. The Idiots, as usual, missed a few fast break layups but were able to take a 3 point lead at halftime.
The second half the VI came out with the same intensity that got them the lead in the 2nd quarter. Frederic “Weis” Paul consistently penetrated the Hit Squad defense giving the Idiot’s big men many easy scoring opportunities down low. The defense held strong as the Hit Squad struggled to get off quality shots. Trying to get cause some turnovers, the Hit Squad started to double down on John. John (who is starting to become more vocal and take over as a floor general) recognized this and continually dished to the open men cutting to the hole. The Idiots built a double digit lead in the fourth quarter capped by a great drive and dish by Fribble to Greg Harrison who finished with authority. Key free throws by Twebs and Frank down the stretch led to a 51-41 victory.
With the win, the Village Idiots are now in first place heading into the final game of the season against their familiar foe Holy Name. A win would give the Idiots the number one seed in the playoffs and make the road to 3 straight championships much easier. Hope to see some VI faithful there to support the team this Monday at 8:45pm.
