Walk-off Homerun gives Idiots another comeback win!
By VI Sports Insider | June 22, 2009
The Village Idiots have always shown the Refuse to Lose attitude in them in during summer basketball and flag-football leading to championships and many successful seasons. But there is a new team stealing the front page these days and its the V.I. Softball team. After a miserable first year, the Idiots have instilled that VI attitude of finding ways to win games and it has them off to a 5-2 start after Wednesday’s night drama.
“Before the rally started, I checked the lineup and realized I might have the opportunity to win the game,” Tommy “Tex” Casal stated after the game. “I heard Dubya say that he didn’t want to hit with two outs because he didn’t want to make the final out. I said this is what we play for bro, don’t worry I’ll take care of business. And the rest is V.I. history.” An actual quote from Tex himself. Casal finished off the five run inning with a walk-off two run home-run to give the Idiots the 21-20 win over the Beach House.
Tex was not alone on the night as many of the Idiots chipped in with each player in the lineup scoring atleast one run. The excitement took off in the 4th inning with the Beach House leading 11-6. With two-outs, the Idiots rallied to score seven runs to take a 13-11 advantage. Back-to-back RBI singles by TWeber and TStanley started up the rally. Two batters later Joey “Boombah” Wesselhoft hit a single to right field and the Idiots showed off their speed. Attempting to score from second, Stanley beat out a close play at the plate and with a Ty Cobb like slide knocked the ball loose from the catcher. Casal wasn’t too far behind Stanley and Wesselhoft came all the way around to score to tie it up. Roy Vaccaro and Petey Carrol followed with a pair of RBI singles to cap the rally.
The Idiots took the field with some momentum but the Beach House quickly put that to rest once again. But not without some drama. With one-out in the top of the 5th, Beach House was rallying and after a run scoring single one of their players attempted to take an extra base. Weber fired a throw into 3rd base that seem to beat the runner. The runner slid into Wesselhoft’s leg, who was blocking the base, and came off the bag. Wesselhoft put on the tag for what many of the Idiots thought would be the 2nd out. But the runner claimed to be “injured” and time was called by the umpires. Several Idiots argued the call but the runner was ruled safe and despite being in a close game, VI manager Peter “Zimmer” Allocco trying to earn the sportsmanship award told the Beach House that we would allow the injured player not to be ruled automatically out if his turn in the batting order came up.
Several V.I. veterans did not like Allocco’s Mr. Nice Guy approach and had some choice words for the Beach House pitcher and their fans. After all that unfolded, the B.H. scored five runs to go up 16-13.
Due to time restrictions and league rules, no inning can start after 11:15 pm so the Idiots were running out of time. They took advantage of the Beach House playing with only three outfielders and once again rallied to tie it at 16. Stanley’s RBI triple got it started for the V.I.. Casal would follow with a Sacfly to score Stanley and then Joey Wesselhoft’s solo homer to center field would even the score.
The Umpires announced that the 6th inning would be the last inning. So rather then take care of business in the top half the Idiots put themselves in another big hole giving up 4 runs to fall behind 20-16.
That’s when the fireworks started and led to Tex Casal’s walk-off dramatics. Gerry Connors, who blessed everyone with his presence finally, got it started with an RBI single. Terry Carrol would follow with a Sacfly and Weber’s RBI single cut the deficit to 20-19. That’s when Tommy Casal would nail his two-out, two-run homer to win it for the Idiots.
Casal, Wesselhoft, and Steve Studley all finished with a team high 3 RBIs and pitcher Roy “Johan Dellabante” Vaccaro improved to 4-1 as a starter. The Idiots now find themselves in the mix for a playoff spot coming up at the half way point at 5-2, with three wins by just one run. The V.I. will be in action again Wednesday (6/24) night at 9:30 p.m. and the faithful will be hoping for a better post-game showing.

My client has been defamed by this purported claim that he didn’t want to hit with two outs - no one is a better hitter under pressure than Mr. Boombah…I mean my client
Secondly, my client also wants to know what is with hidden love affair between Tommy “Ennis Del Mar” Stanley and Tommy “Jack Twist” Casal - is this a “don’t ask, don’t tell” organization?
