New York, New York! The Mets/Yanks win in dramatic fashion! Boston and Philly Suck!
By DanKnip | May 23, 2009
What a weekend to be in the Big City! All New York Baseball Fans are united as Interleague play has allowed the Mets and Yankees to help each other out by taking on the arch-rival of their cross-town counterpart, the Phillies and Red Sox… Whether you root for the Bronx Bombers or the Amazin’s out in Queens, Saturday’s action made for a great reason to celebrate baseball in the Big Apple!
The action started at the New Yankee Stadium, when things looked dark for New York’s AL representative going into the bottom of the ninth… down 4-2 with the Phil’s Brad Lidge looming, Johnny Damon led off with a walk and two batters later (the Home Run machine of late) Alex Rodriguez smacked a 3-2 pitch over the short porch in right to even the game at 4… Melky Cabrera eventually supplied the game winning hit after Robinson Cano singled and stole second to set the table for him… final score New York - 5, Philadelphia - 4!
The drama didn’t end there for the New York faithful… their NL squad and the Red Sox were engaged in a pitchers’ duel up in Fenway Park for the night cap… with Josh Beckett edging Mike Pelfrey through 8 innings, the Mets were down to their last out against the imposing Jonathan Papelbon… BUT with Gary Sheffield on first, Omir Santos crushed Papelbon’s offering onto the ledge of the Green Monster to give the Mets the 3-2 advantage!
With K-Rod sitting this one out due to some pre-game back spasms, the close was handed over to JJ Putz… although Putz looked less than stellar, the Mets defense saved the day, as diving grabs by David Wright and Ramon Martinez were complimented by big scoops on the receiving end from Luis Castillo and Dan Murphy and Putz escaped with the Save! Mets win 3-2!!!
Another NYC double-dip tomorrow and we could see both teams in first place going into Memorial Day! Let’s Go Mets! (and Yanks I guess)
