    Biggest Disappointments of 2008!

    By Mystery Reporter | December 8, 2008

We’ve had the VI Power Rankings of my top ten teams for most of the year, now I want to talk about the 5 most disappointing teams of 2008.  Most of these teans came in with huge expectations, but overall never delivered…

Georgia-Bulldog-Poon5. Georgia Bulldogs - I had this team ranked as my preseason #1. Big armed Matt Stafford and RB Knowshon Moreno were coming back to lead an explosive offense that killed opponents in the end of 2007. They won their last 7 games which included blowouts of Florida, Auburn and Hawaiin the Sugar Bowl. The Dawgs finished at 9-3 this year, were a nonfactor in the SEC title and lost their rivalry game to Georgia Tech…..They had a lot of injuries and off field issues, but this team didn’tcome close to my expectations.

Mizzou-Kisses4. Missouri Tigers - The Tigers finished 12-2 last year (with their only 2 losses coming against Oklahoma). The Tigers finished 2nd in the Big 12and throttled Arkansas by 31 in the Cotton Bowl. This team returned QB Chase Daniel, along with WR Jeremy Maclin and most of what was suppose to be an improved defense. Well the defense never showed up this year, and losses to Texas, Oklahoma State and their arch Rival Kansas killed any chance at a title shot. They did get to the Big 12 title game, but were no match for Oklahoma losing by 41 points. This team never had a quality win this season. Damn Son!!!

Illinois-Cheerleader3. Illinois Fighting Illini - Things fell apart for this team. I expected them to compete for the Big Ten title this year….. they never even got Bowl eligible and finished below .500 at 5-7. Remember this team beat Ohio State and went to the Rose Bowl. They lost RB Rashard Mendenhall, but returned QB Juice Williams, WR A. Benn, CB Vontae Davis along with plenty of other talent. They dropped the opener to Mizzou then had conference losses to PennState, Minnesota, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Northwestern. A monster 23-17 loss against Western Michigan solidified there spot on this list.  I do have higher expectations for them in 2009.

WVU-Cheerleader2. West Virginia Mountaineers - Coming off an 11-2 season which included a 48-28 smack down of Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl I thought this team could have a national title run in them. Their preseason rank was high, their schedule wasn’t crazy and they returned stars like Pat White and Noel Devine. The 2008 Mountaineers football team never hit it’s stride. They were held without a TD against ECU losing 24-3. OUCH! The season got worse when they dropped the next game against Colorado. WVU rallied and won 5 in a row…. included a 34-17 trouncing against Auburn, but conference losses to Cincinnati and a rivalry loss to Pittsburgh sealed them at 8-4. They will be relegated to a mediocre Bowl game, and wonder what happened.

Clemson-Tiger-Poon1. Clemson Tigers - The Tigers were coming off a 9-4 season. They returned both star RB’s in James Davis and C.J. Spiller. QB Cullen Harper was coming off a huge season and WR Aaron Kelly was going to be a stud. Well this season ended up a disaster from the start. They walked into a buzz saw in Alabama and lost 34-10…. The game wasn’t nearly as close as the score reflected. Conferences losses against Maryland, WakeForest, Georgia Tech and Florida State ended Tommy Bowden’s tenure at Clemson, and the Tigers finished at 7-5. They were a non factor in a tight conference and easily win the biggest disappointment award. This team was a preseason top 10 team. Geeezzzz

*** Michigan at 3-9 was close to being on this list but I give them a transitional pass for 2008.

I think you have to add Auburn (#10), Wisconsin (#13), and Tennessee (#18). All were supposed to have great seasons and were highly ranked in the preseason polls (which I think mean nothing), regardless, Wisky was in the top 10 at one point. All three did not fair well.

Oh, before I forget Notre DUMB. Dumb for hiring and keeping Charlie Weis. 6-6 is not what Notre Dame is about, or maybe now it is…
