6 games for “Sloppy Seconds”???
By Allock of the Week | December 5, 2008
In case you haven’t heard, Sean Avery was suspended for six games by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on Friday after he made a crude comment regarding his ex-girlfriends dating other hockey players. The exact quote in a pregame interview the other night was “I just wanted to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about. But, enjoy the game tonight.” (Avery’s ex, Elisha Cuthbert, is dating Calgary defensman Dion Phaneuf and had been romantically linked to Mike Komisarek of the Canadiens.)
Here’s what this comes down to…Sean Avery is a stupid idiot who is better off keeping his comments to himself, but Gary Bettman is the individual in the wrong. Bettman suspended Avery under the guise that his comments were “detrimental to the league” which is absolutely ridiculous. A comment about ex-girlfriends and who they are now dating has nothing to do with the foundation or integrity of the sport…in fact, it has nothing to do with hockey at all, except for the coincidence that his ex-girlfriends may prefer hockey players as partners. Mind you, this is also a sport where every five minutes you’re more than likely going to see two guys drop their gloves and beat the crap out of each other…I’ve yet to see the commissioner demand that the leagues most notorious fighters attend anger management or something of the like. This seems to be nothing more than an overreaching individual sticking his nose in on an issue which the NHL really has no jurisdiction over. Had Avery made a comment that would imply ignorance or prejudice towards a particular group, then I could see the punishment of sensitivity training coming in handy, but this is just wrong. Maybe Gary Bettman is just jealous that Sean Avery humps and dumps better pieces of @ss than Bettman has ever dreamed about…
Good Day!

Bottom line, the NHL is a business, just like any other office. Only their office is on the ice, in the public eye, etc… Their meetings are in front of millions. They are measured by public interest (which usually correlates with ticket sales, etc.). When you go into the public (media) and discuss non-NHL related business, in this case defaming others character, one is going to be reprimanded. This is just like in any other case, if you were at the office xmas party (more public of a scale) and you get up in front of everyone and say you know president so and so is an blank, and to top it off he is blanking my old blank blank. Frea**in blank blank… Not going to fly, you are certainly going to be reprimanded. Such is the case here. Bettmann is sending a message, YOU STICK TO NHL business and NHL business only. In this case, why you won or lost in a professional cliche manner.
