VI College Football Power Rankings going into Week #9
By Mystery Reporter | October 21, 2008
1. Texas Longhorns - Their 56-31 dismantling of Missouri leaves no doubt in my mind this is the best team in the country right now. No one close at this point. The score doesn’t reflect the way they dominated… Mizzou was held to just 3 first half points, and led 35-3 at the half before taking their foot off the pedal. DE Brian Orakpo is a force, that sparks a good defense. QB Colt McCoy is a Heisman favorite. This team is good, but will still be tested by Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas andTexas A&M. If they win out…. They deserve the #1 ranking.
2. Alabama Crimson Tide - The tide currently have one big win (Georgia) on their resume which is why I am giving them the slight nod over Penn State. They didn’t look very good against Ole Miss last week, and almost let the game slip away. They still play LSU and Auburn then potentially Florida in an SEC title game. They need to clean it up a bit. I don’t see them running the table, but this is could be a BCS bound team.

3. Penn State Nittany Lions - Whew!!!! The PSU fans can breathe a sigh of relief, as they avoided another let down against Michigan. The Nitts scored 32 unanswered points in the second half en route to a 46-17 win. PSU offense has been a total surprise this year racking up over 45 ppg…. The biggest test of their season comes this weekend. If PSU can handle OSU, I would move them up to the #2 spot next week. If not, theBig Ten won’t have an undefeated team anymore.
4. Oklahoma State Cowboys - It may seem high, but I am giving undefeated teams the right of way here. They are 7-0, and the win against Missouri gave them instant street cred. They go into Austin to play the Longhorns this week, where they can make a TITANIC statement. OSU has an explosive offense, but their defense has beed a pleasant surprise as of late.
5. Texas Tech Red Raiders - Another undefeated team, but Tech hasn’t really been tested yet. They have Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma remaining on the docket, so that will change. I don’t expect the Raiders to hold this spot for much longer, the Big 12 South is too tough. Harrell to Crabtree is a great combination.
6. Oklahoma Sooners - The 4th Big 12 South team to crack the top 10. This is the best of the 1 loss teams out there right now. Look for OU to handle the rest of their schedule and hope for a Texas slip up or two. QB Sam Bradford is one of the best passers in the nation, but I feel like they need to get their rushing attack going again. I think it hurt them in their loss to Texas. Tough games left, they will be in the hunt in the end.
7. Florida Gators - The second best one loss team. I hate their loss to Ole Miss, it just doesn’t sit well with me. I loved what they did against LSU. That game saved their season. It’s sets them up for a winner take all showdown against Georgia… Winner will win the East(sorry Vandy…but you’re fading fast). Tebow should have this team geared up for the rest of the season. My pick to win the SEC.
8. USC Trojans - They whipped Ohio State, and don’t play any other tough games this season. If there was a team that couldn’t afford a loss, it was USC. Their loss to Oregon State kills the perception of this team. Look at what the Big 12 & SEC teams have to play. No way a one loss USC team leapfrogs any one loss Big 12 or SEC team by the end of the season. Sorry!
9. Ohio State Buckeyes - The Buckeyes would need to absolutely obliterate Penn State this weekend for me to believe they belong in the national championship talks. I don’t think it’ll happen, but this team is good. Terelle Pryor keeps flashing signs of his unbelievable ability. Beanie Wells (when healthy) is the best back in the country. The defense has been playing better as the season goes along. They were impressive with their 45-7 win against Sparty last week. This upcoming game is everything for the Bucks…
10. Georgia Bulldogs - The Bulldogs won a good one against a scrappy Vanderbilt team last week… So that is two straight since the Bama debacle. Florida still looms on the schedule, but if they win that, they’ll be the SEC East champs. They’ll need to win that if they’re going to come back into National title talks.
