NCAA College Football Power Rankings going into Week 6…
By Mystery Reporter | September 29, 2008
Ohhhhhhhh Baby!!! This is what College Football is all about!!! So many upsets…. Here are the new VI Power Rankings:
1. Alabama Crimson Tide - No, I am not jumping on the band wagon, saying that they’ll win the national championship just yet… but, no other team has put together a better body of work thus far. Bama whipped Georgia. The 41-30 score didn’t reflect how lopsided the game actually was. JPW was extremely efficient, they dominated the trenches and won a huge road game. With LSU and Auburn still on the schedule, there is still work to be done, but this team has answered every call with authority so far.
2. Oklahoma Sooners - The Sooners remain undefeated at 4-0 and come off an impressive 35-10 win over a ranked opponent in TCU. This was the toughest defense that OU has played so far, and QB Sam Bradford made it look easy. He carved up the Horned Frogs defense for over 400 yards passing and 4 TD passes. The OU defense held TCU without a TD until it was too late. Ya gotta like what you’ve seen so far from OU.
3. Missouri Tigers - Mizzou was IDLE this week, but are now in prime position to get to the BCS title game. Can Chase get them there? Defense is still a question mark.
4. LSU Tigers - This might be the only team that can matchup with BAMA in the trenches. The Tigers moved to 4-0 with a 10 point win over Mississippi State. QB Jarrett Lee is still the key to this team’s success. He looked good against MSU throwing for over 260 yards and 2 TDs. With one quality win already over Auburn, they get a chance to pick up another one in the swamp in 2 weeks.
5. Penn State Nittany Lions - This might be a little high for some people’s liking…. but I am going off their body of work. The Nitts knocked off a ranked Illinois team this past weekend by 14 points… This team is starting to remind me of the team that won the Orange Bowl 3 years ago… DWILL is starting to look like the player maker they envisioned scoring 3 different ways. Ohh, and is it me, or does the mashing of Oregon State in week-2 seem a little better then it did last week? Nitts are playing really good ball. They’re at Purdue this week.
6. Texas Longhorns - I’ve taken a lot of heat for talking up Texas prior to the season, but after they obliterated Arkansas 52-10 my fellow VI writters should come around. I like QB Colt McCoy a lot… 14 TDS toonly 1 INT. McCoy also leads the team in rushing with 278 yards (not agood thing). Texas needs to get more out of the running game, but the defense is getting better and better… Two weeks against Oklahoma… circle it on your calander!
7. BYU Cougars - The Cougs were IDLE this week, but move into a good position here. I don’t discount BYU not being in a BCS conference this year. As a whole the Mountain West is better then at least 3 BCS conferences right now. BYU already beat 2 PAC-10 teams. TCU, Air Force and Utah are their biggest challenges. I like this team.
8. South Florida Bulls - USF is back in the hunt again this year after rising as high as #2 in the AP polls last year. The Bulls already have a quality non-conference win against Kansas, which is good because the Big East is down this year. Coming off a 41-10 win over NC State the Bulls are rolling. They’ll need to be dominant in their conference to move up the charts.
9. Texas Tech Red Raiders - TT was IDLE this week. They’re 4-0 and with a tough schedule that features Oklahoma and Texas… The Raiders will have the opportunity to make a statement.
10. USC Trojans - Oooops they did it again! Another year, another inferior opponent, another total let down. USC lost the inside track to the BCS title game by not showing up in Corvallis. Not much more to write about these guys… Total disappointment.
Almost in the top 10:
Georgia (may have lost to best team in country, will have an opportunity to move up again)
Ohio State (Beanie is back and they still have quality opponents in Illinois, Wisky and Penn State left on tap)
Oklahoma State (watch out for these guys)
Florida (not impressive this past week, will need to beat LSU to getback in this season)
Auburn (will lose several more games, look for them to work there waydown the charts)
