Big Country Covers the Spread - Week #5 picks

    By Big Country | September 26, 2008

With the collapse last night of USC’s national title hopes, I thought this might be a good week to avoid the picks. The weekend ahead has too many people that are “sure” that a team is going to win, cover, or whatever else. Sounds like everyone who had an opinion on the USC-OSU game before kickoff. Guess what? They were wrong.

However, when you’re riding a wave, you keep going until the ride is done. That’s the way to roll… and that’s the way these picks roll. Speaking of which, the picks were 4-1 ATS last week and 5-1-1 the week before. That’s a hot streak of 9-2-1. It makes me feel like this:

Anyway, I do love this great game of football, so here we go…

(Picks in Bold, home teams in CAPS)

    GEORGIA -6.5 Alabama

The rest of the country may have drunk the Nick Saban cool-aid, but I’m not sold into Bama yet. Blackout game in Athens this weekend means the crowd will be into this one for the Dawgs. I keep hearing how Alabama’s D line will dominate, and maybe they will slow down the Dawgs. I just can’t see Alabama being able to move the ball with serial-killer-named John Parker Wilson after their rushing attack gets shut down by Georgia’s front 7.

    PENN ST -15.5 Illinois

I’ve been betting against Penn State a couple of times this year… and losing. The nittany lions are quietly shaping up to be the best team in the Big 10. Illinois meanwhile has problems on both sides of the ball, and struggled to get a win against Louisiana-Lafayette, proud home of the Waterboy Bobby Boucher. I’m not going against them again, and if I just jinxed them, oh well.

    TCU +18.5 OKLAHOMA

The Sooners may be the best team in the country. They have so many different ways to beat you, and Stoops will get them ready every week to play. For whatever reason though, TCU gives them a game whenever they play. OU is 0-3 ATS last 3 meetings against TCU… Not to mention TCU beat them last meeting in 2005. I’ll take the points and look for the TCU defense to keep this close. Maybe this one seems a bit like USC-OSU?

    CLEMSON -10.5 Maryland

Serious disclaimer on this one – about 70% of the other “experts” you will read have Maryland covering here. I’m going against that trend because one thing jumps out at me – Maryland’s rushing defense. Its not very good, and one of these games, the combo of CJ Spiller and James Davis is going to put up a ton of points. Also, I have a feeling that Maryland is a Jekyl/Hyde team when it comes to Road/Home games. Tough at home, soft on the road.

    NEBRASKA -7 Virginia Tech

I love it when spreads are made by people reading box scores and not from actually watching the games. Yes, Va Tech beat a good UNC team… and they had to come from behind without UNC’s top offensive weapon (QB Yates) to do it. UNC had a doe-eyed freshman QB chucking passes to the Va Tech defense and gave them the game. I’ve watched a lot of Va Tech this year, and trust me, they ain’t that good.
