College Football Games of the Week - Week #5
By Mystery Reporter | September 24, 2008
Here are the best games to see this week… check the Comments for the Analysis of the rest of the VI Staff, and anyone else who have something to say!
Georgia vs. Alabama - Does anyone else love this matchup? The Tide have really come out this year and made an early statement. At 4-0 they have very impressive wins against Clemson and Arkansas. Bama is nasty in the trenches on both sides of the ball…. Evidence was their 328 rushing yards last week, while holding the Hogs to under 3 yards per carry. This will be Bama’s biggest test of the season thus far. We all know the Dawgs are loaded, but they haven’t been totally dominant. Knowshon Moreno is one of the top 5 backs in the country. The Tide will have the edge in the trenches, and they’re my upset pick of the week. GC says gimme Bama by 3…… Roll Tide Roll!
Illinois vs. Penn State - Looking at their schedule, I definitely expected the Nits to be 4-0 at this point. What is shocking is how they’re doing it. Their average margin of victory is over 42 points. The offense has been able to do whatever it wants and the defense has been stingy. Enter Illinois. The Fighting Illini will present the biggest challenge of the young season so far for PSU. Led by Juice Williams the Illini offense has been a little inconsistent. They looked good against Mizzou, but tailed off since. The defense got torched by Chase Daniel, but who hasn’t. With Ohio State looking extremely vulnerable, this game is huge. Right now it’s a 4 team race (Wisky, OSU, PSU and Illinois) after this game it will be down to 3. GC says gimme the Nitts by a TD… WE ARE… PENN STATE… WE ARE!
TCU vs. Oklahoma - The Mountain West made a lot of noise by beating the life out of the Pac 10. They now have a chance to make even more noise when the Horned Frogs of TCU play #2 Oklahoma. The Sooners are coming off a bye week, and will be rested and ready to play. Their first three games were as close to perfection as you can get, steamrolling Chattanooga, Cincinnatti and Washington. TCU is one of those teams looking to crash the BCS, and need a good game here to do so. The TCU defense is very good, but can they contain QB Sam Bradford and the explosive Sooners offense. This game will be a close one… GC says gimme the Sooners by a TD!
Clemson vs. Maryland - The ACC is a snooooozer I know, but there isn’t much else out there this week. Clemson seems to be rebounding from the beating they took at the hands of Alabama. They’ve ripped off three straight wins against weak opponents that should ensure they have some of their confidence back. The Terrapins are also a 3-1 team, and seem to have built some momentum following there big win over Cal. Before the season, I would have been all over Clemson in this one… but I still see them getting pushed all over the field against Bama. The Terps will be tough, but the Tigaaas are home, so give them the edge… GC says Spiller and Davis get it done on the ground… Clemson by 10
Florida State vs. Colorado - The Buffaloes opened eyes last week, with their overtime win against WVU… (Great Pick Wally). At 3-0, Colorado is off and running, but their schedule is brutal. They should win this one though. Cody Hawkins cannot turn the ball over as much as he did last week… and they need to come to play this week. FSU might not be winning much these days, but they have speed and players. The Noles offense looked aweful last week only putting up a 3 spot against Wake. The Noles are in serious trouble this year and might need to win this game to get to a bowl. This is a huge game for them… Ponder zip you lip this week… I am going to ride the Rocky Highs this week. GC says gimme the Buffs by 4 (but we’ll give you an FSU pic anyway)
Nebraska vs. Virginia Tech - The Hokies do absolutely nothing for me this year. They looked outmatched against UNC (who is tough) and got knocked off by a scrappy ECU team. Tech has QB issues, until Taylor finds his rhythm. The defense and special teams will always be tough, but they’re just not as special as we’ve seen in the past. The Hokies only have 1 TD pass this season in 4 games… They struggled against Furman… They need to make a statment here, to get some national attention. The Cornhuskers are 3-0 and will face their biggest test thus far. If QB Joe Ganz doesn’t turn the ball over in this one, and RB Marlon Lucky finds room to run… The Huskers will cruise. GC says gimme the Farm BOYS by 2 TDS. WOW!

Bama V Georgia - BAS!!!!!! That’s what time it is. GA was the sexy pic this season. JW had it pegged that Bama should and would make some noise this season and BOY was he right. Bama is stronger at the point of attack, has the 8th ranked run defense in the country and can run the ball.. While GA has weapons the OL/DL hurts them and Noshawn Moreno. UPSET CITY!!! Bama by a TD.
Ill vs PSU - I have to say Dr. Ron picked these guys early… and I doubted him. I don’t any more. I love the defense here. And defense wins games and championships. Ill is weaker on D this season then last and THAT is gonna be the difference. PSU in Beaver Stadium by 2 TDs.
TCU v OKL - I want TCU, to win here but I don’t see it happening. OKLA will win this one. Expect a close one though. OKLA by 3.
Clemson vs Maryland - Who is Clemson? Every year it’s the same damn story. High expectations. Followed by a let down.. And it happened again this season. BUT I think they are improving and will only get better. Maryland is away and Death Valley is gonna be rockin. Clemson by a TD
FSU v Colorado - The buffs are playing good football. FSU is NOT what they were. They are playing at FSU but I think Hawkins is the truth. Buffs go to FSU and beat the Noles by 3.
Neb vs Va Tech - Va Tech is having a down year. QB is not very solid. Their best RB is suspended. Macho Harris is getting no rush from the DL. The BLACKSHIRTS ARE ON THE WAY BACK. allowing about 10.3 points per game. This is their first test before their conference schedule. Look for them to pass. Neb Wins..

Hey sports fans, Allock of the Week here, and you there…here’s my analysis for this week’s games:
Georgia v. Alabama - To be honest, I’m not that excited by this matchup. Georgia hasn’t looked like a team that deserved a preseason number one ranking and I’m not sold on Saban and Alabama yet. Should ‘Bama beat Georgia, then I will give kudos to Saban for the job he’s done. This should be a close matchup, and in honor of my buddy Wally, I’ll give the nod to Eric Curry, John Copeland and the Tide.
Illinois v. Penn State - As Dr. Ron can attest, the Allock of the Week is a huge PSU fan since the days that his brother attended there (the Todd Blackledge/Curt Warner era). PSU has steamrolled its first four opponents, including those same Oregan State Beavers that shocked USC. Illinois, on the other hand, hasn’t been as dominant, and Juice Williams clearly hasn’t shown any progress in the passing game. Also, Maurice Evans will be back for Penn State this week - a rich defense just gets richer. PSU wins big this week…
TCU v. Oklahoma - Oklahoma is seeking to prove they are the cream of the crop in a talented Big 12 division. TCU is a talented squad, but their two best defenders are gone and Oklahoma is just too good. LB Brian Bosworth is doubtful this week but Oklahoma should win this one pretty handily.
Clemson v. Maryland - Not worth a review…the ACC sucks
FSU v. Colorado - The Allock of the Week is a big hater of Free Shoes University and was beyond elated to see Wake Forest beat them last week. Colorado is making major strides football-wise after spending the last few years mired in a sexual assault scandal. Unless Charlie Ward and Warrick Dunn suit up for them this week, FSU will have no chance at beating Colorado.
Nebraska v. Va. Tech - Oh, how the mighty have fallen…Tech used to be a shoo-in for postseason play under Beamer Ball, but not this year. Glennon can’t get it done and Tyrod Taylor isn’t much better. Bo Pelini has brought some intensity back to Lincoln that it hasn’t seen in years. The Huskers will be without RB Thunder Collins this week as he prepares for his trial on first degree murder charges, but I like Nebraska here anyway…

Last week was a tough one for this guy, starting qb’s for both Oregon and UNC went down with injuries, certainly affecting production. All this said I stand at 16-8 (19-8 incl all PSU games). However, last week is just that last week and we have a lot of great football on this weeks slate.
Beginning with game #1 Bama @ UGA
WOOH! Tough game, Bama has surprised me a little, i suspected them to be very good in time, maybe a year, just not this soon. Nick Saban has been able to recruit top-flight talent everywhere he has been. He has his team playing very well, with a great mix of seasoned leadership in John Parker Wilson and young talent in Julio Jones. UGA has been a little lackluster, and need to show me a little more that they should be a #1, 2 or 3 team in the country. Consistency, consistency, consistency. However, with this game in Athens, @ prime time, one would suspect you go with the Dawgs. Sorry UGA VII, I am going with the Tide on this one. There are always surprise teams in college football, one of the reasons why I love it and BAMA just might be knocking down the door tonight to say we ARE a good football team. Roll Tide Roll…
Game 2: Illinois @ PSU - The fighting illini are headed to happy valley where a white out awaits them. This game will be nationally televised at prime time. The Nittany Lion players have been saying all week they do not want revenge, last year is last year. I do not buy it, I was at last years game, we should of beaten the Illini. One name Anthony Morelli, that sums it up. However, this years PSU team has yet to be battle tested. I need to see them in a game situation, battling adversity. When adversity arises, is when the true leaders emerge. Illinois has a lot of athleticism on both sides of the ball, and while some of their play has left much to be desired, we can not count them out. Especially when you get into conference play when teams know one another’s tendencies and players well. We saw an example of such the other night, Oregon State!
For PSU to win this game, NO turnovers, controlled special teams play and ram the ball down illinois throat. The Nitts win in this one, but there is a lot of football yet to be played until we get that Big Ten Crown.
Game 3: TCU @ Oklahoma -
Two names DeMarco Murray and Sam Bradford. TCU is a nice story (alma mater of D. Tomlinson), but the Sooners are just too strong and athletic.
Sooners WIN!
Game 4: Maryland @ Clemson - Clemson needs to continue show me more consistency. Still the Tigers WIN!
Game 5: Colorado @ FSU - Coach Hawkins brings energy to his ball clubs. He did at Boise State and seems to have done it at Colorado. Watching FSU last week, they did NOT look like the FSU of old. The Buffs win and are 4-0!
Game 6: V. Tech @ Nebraska - V. Tech seems to be scoring just enough points to win and Nebraska has not played anyone worth mentioning. This will be an interesting match up, have the black shirts returned to their winning tradition. I am based on results and Va. Tech has been battle tested this season several times, I am going with the Hokies to get the WIN in lincoln.
A team not on this slate are the Buckeyes of Ohio State! Pay attention to them this week. This is the perfect opportunity for them to get better without the national pressure. With Beanie Wells returning (hopefully healthy) and Terrelle Pryor (should of gone to PSU) at qb, this team might continue to blossom and be back in the national title hunt very soon. They play a 4-0, Minnesota team this week, and we will start to get answers to several questions,
1. Is Minnesota really better?
2. Is B. Wells healthy?
3. Is Pryor a good qb? Throwing 4 TD’s against Troy, I am not convinced. Wait till the Nitts come to the shoe young man…
That is all…
