Watch Out SEC, Big 12 is no joke this Year
By Mystery Reporter | September 19, 2008
I am a Big Ten guy at heart, but yes, I will concede the SEC has been the standard of excellence is college football the last few years. 2 national champions the last two years, brutal conference play which doesn’t allow teams to go undefeated and bowl dominance is tough to argue. As good as they have been the last few years, I am thinking that it is very possible the Big 12 might be better this year. Very slightly.
AP Top 25 teams:
Both teams boast 5 teams in the AP polls : SEC has (3) Georgia, (4) Florida, (6) LSU, (9) Alabama and (10) Auburn….. Big 12 has (2) Oklahoma, (5) Missouri, (7) Texas, (11) Texas Tech and (19) Kansas.
The top teams for the big 12 have been awesome. Oklahoma and Missouri can play with anyone in the country. Texas and Texas Tech are rolling with high powered offenses, and Kansas only blemish came on a nail biter to #12 South Florida. Tech’s defense will be a concern when they play tougher competition, but their offense is insane. Texas is a wild card!
The top teams in the SEC have also been awesome….. but I am not sold on Auburn or Alabama and think they’ll drop a little. Bama crushed Clemson in the opener, but Clemson is ehhhh. Auburn just beat Mississippi State 3-2. So I think there are some holes there. LSU, Florida and Georgia will play with anyone in the country, but I think LSU will have QB issues against tougher competition.
Best of the rest:
Here is where I think the Big 12 has a slight edge…… Those middle of the pack teams is where the SEC usually seperates itself. Tennesse lost to UCLA in a shicking non conference game. South Carolina has a very tough defense, but not impressive on offnese. Kentucky impressed with a nice win over Louisville, Ole Miss and Miss State each lost non conference games. Arkansas doesn’t look good good at all. Vanderbilt has been a nice surprise as they knocked off South Carolina and Rice.
Big 12 has a lot of depth this year. Let’s start with Colorado. The Buffaloes knocked off #21West Virginia last night, and moved to 3-0. They also had a convincing win vs. Colorado State. Nebraska is 3-0 and has won convincingly in all three games. Coach Bo Pelini could be turning this program around quick. Oklahoma State is also 3-0. Kansas State, Iowa State and Baylor will be somewhat competitive. Texas A&M lost to Arkansas State, but will also be very competitive.
HEAD TO HEAD:
