Dr. Ron’s Prescription for Week 3
By Dr. Ron | September 10, 2008
Let’s face it, last week was a lackluster week for high impact games. As expected, Oklahoma, Florida, and Arizona State all took care of business as expected. Wake Forest squeeked by Ole Miss. With a core of young talent, Coach Nutt, might be brewing something up down in Mississippi (keep an eye on those confederate flags). ECU continues to impress and obtained a well deserved 14th ranking. Skip Holtz has his team playing well. My Nittany Lions were a nice surprise in dominating the Beavers of Oregon State. However, the question remains are my Nitts that good or are the Beavers that bad! We will find out how good my Nitts are on Sept 27th in Happy Valley, when Juice Williams and company come to town.
This week has a nice slate of games and the Mystery Reporter has picked some great contests.
1) Ohio State @ USC - This is big time football. Two big time programs slugging it out. However, the slugging is going be done by USC in this one. Without a healthy Beanie Wells, Ohio State will become one-dimensional against an athletic, future NFL player riddled USC defense. In addition to this game being played at prime time, in the coliseum, I do not expect the Trojans to disappoint. Trojans WIN! Sorry GC…
2) Kansas @ South Florida - This is another opportunity for the Bulls of South Florida to show the world that they are legit. They are the major (only) show on friday night at prime time. I like the Bulls QB Matt Groethe, he simply makes plays. Mangino will need to focus on winning the Big 12 to hopefully get a BCS bowl berth. Bulls win in a close game.
3) Wisky @ Fresno State - This is an interesting game to me. Fresno State beat Rutgers handily in Piscataway last week. Wisky likes to run the ball, Rutgers struggled with this against Fresno State. I like Coach Pat Hill’s philosophy, “We will play anyone, anytime, anywhere”. His teams traditionally have hung with some great teams. Remember Reggie Bush and the Trojans, what a game that was. However, in this game I think the Bulldogs of Fresno State do not come up short. Fresno State upsets Wisky in the farmlands of California.
4)Arkansas @ Texas - Arkansas has lost a lot of talent, Texas does not seem to have that swagger since Vince Young. It will take some time for Bobby Petrino to get some guys familiar with what he wants to do. This game is in Austin, and Texas simply has more talent. Hook em horns’. Texas wins…

5) Michigan @ Notre Dame - How the mighty have fallen! I will be honest I am not a fan of either of these programs. Probably because I am a Penn State alum. Notre Dame did not win last week, San Diego State lost. I think NBC begins to question why they re-signed Notre Dame to a TV contract. Michigan wins in South Bend.
Other games of interest:
Oregon @ Purdue - Two strong offenses battle it out
UCLA @ BYU - What a come back by the Bruins last week
Oklahoma @ Washington - Keep an eye on this game, Ty Willingham’s players are out to prove something…
Lastly, you guessed it, my Nittany Lions take on the Syracuse Orange in the Carrier Dome. Long gone are the days of Jim Brown. The Nitts win big, with 2nd and 3rd stringers playing the majority of the 2nd half. Orange head coach Greg Robinson might be looking for a new job
