College Football Games of the Week - Week #1
By Mystery Reporter | August 28, 2008
Ok college football fans….. It’s that time of year again, with the
NCAA season kicking off this weekend. Will there be another Appalachian
State - Michigan game this year? Who will be #1 & 2, and go to the BCS
title game. Who will be crowned conference champion…. It’s all coming
up, as we buckle in for another exciting season of college ball.
Here are some good games to watch……
Alabama vs. Clemson (Roll Wally Roll GOTW)
Wally’s Crimson Tide are smelling upset here. Clemson is argueably the
best team in the ACC, but what does that mean. The ACC doesn’t scare
many people these days, and look more like the Sun Belt conference. Make
no mistake about it, Clemson is loaded at the skill position with QB
Cullen Harper leading the way. The offensive line is the big question
mark here. Bama returns QB John Parker - Wilson and hopes he provides
the leadership they need. They play in the tough SEC which means they
should be ready for the Tigers. This one will be close. GC says “gimme
the Tiiiigas by a FG”.
Illinois vs. Missouri (Top GOTW)
Illinois is coming off a Rose Bowl season in which they handed Ohio
State 1 of their only 2 losses. Mizzou is coming off a 12-2 season, in
which they should have gone to a BCS Bowl. The Tigers are favored to win
the Big 12 North and might be the team to unseat Oklahoma this year. The
Fighting Illini are going to be in the mix for the Big Ten title again.
Both teams return their starting QB’s (Daniel & Juice). Both teams have
playmakers at WR (Maclin & Benn). Both teams should have improved
defenses. Last year Mizzou won 40-34….. An Illinois win would really
help the perception of the Big Ten. I expect another great battle. GC
says “gimme Chase & Co for a dolla”.
Michigan vs. Utah (Appalachian St beat who????GOTW)
Ok folks, this might not seem like a huge game, but the Wolverines have
some demons that need to be exercised in their opener. Remember the App
State debacle, not to mention this could be a down year for Michigan,
not to mention they also have a new coach & new system. Michigan will
have a good defensive line, that must stuff the run and terrorize
opponents QB’s. Big Blue’s offense will be a mystery until we see them.
The Utes pose a major problem for Michigan…. Their defense could be
tops in the Mtn West Conference, and the offense on paper is explosive.
QB Brian Johnson and RB Matt Asiats lead the way. This game could be
another tightly fought game. Michigan will come out jacked. GC says “it
won’t be enough. Utes Roll”.
Florida vs. Hawaii (Tebow special GOTW)
Hawaii was cruising along at 12-0 last season, until it played its’
first big time team in Georgia. There was no Boise State miracle last
year, as they were blown out by the Dawgs 41-10. The score didn’t even
show how lopsided the game actually was. The Rainbow Warriors lost some
key players from that team, and probably won’t even win the WAC this
year. The Gators are loaded and led by Heisman trophy winner QB Tim
Tebow. UF is the wildcard team this year in the SEC East, and could win
the tough conference. I don’t think this one will be to close, but
figured we’d show the Rainbow Warriors some love for scheduling a tough
non conf game. GC says “The Warriors are Gator food”
East Carolina vs. Va Tech (Not so Special Upset GOTW)
I was originally leaning towards the Pirates in this one, but thought
better of it. Beamer will always put together a tough defense and good
special teams. VT returns 4 offensive linemen, along with both of their
QB’s. Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor come into the season with both
having something to prove. Taylor the more athletic QB, is a catalyst
for this offense, but he needs to improve throwing the ball. His
development will dictate the Hokies season. VT is going to struggle to
find itself this year. ECU returns both of it’s top two QB’s as well.
There defense played very tough at times last year (see WVU game), and
really could be in the hunt for a week 1 upset. GC says “Beamerball
prevails, blocked kick, or defensive play wins game for VT”.
USC vs. Virginia (Going back to Cali GOTW)
Let’s start with the Trojans….. Their defense will be scary this year
led by LB’s Rey Maleuga and Brian Cushing. The offense will feature a
new QB in Mark Sanchez and Super Soph Joe McKnight who they hope will be the next Reggie Bush. There is no team in the PAC-10 capable of toppingUSC this year and Pete Carroll will be in another BCS bowl. Virginia is one of those teams that will be tough… but not in this game. Their defense won’t have Chris Long to pressure the QB, and the secondary is suspect. The offense will be decent with Strong Armed QB Peter Lalich starting for the first time. The Cavs will get murdered in this one, but who knows with these guys. Might be interesting… Keep and eye on it. GC says “If you don’t have Trojans in your wallet Saturday night, you better have em on your bookie betting sheet”.
