Idiots Back in the Finals for 3rd Straight Year

August 20, 2007

Monday's matchup against Holy Name marked the Village Idiots' seventh Semifinal appearance in eight years of play in the Town of Hempstead Summer League. Some on the Holy Name squad had similar experience, although with several different teams, and that experience was evident in this one, as neither team seemed phased by the big stage.

The early action was pretty even, as both teams packed in the defense and let the wind do the work on the jumpshots. The Idiots held a small lead at 11-10 after the first quarter, and not much changed in the second as they were only able to stretch it to 19-16 at the half.

The high intensity of the V.I. defense paid off in the 3rd as they were able to capitalize on the turnovers that they had been causing all game. Some easy fast breaks helped open things up to a 31-22 lead heading into the 4th. A 5 point run by Holy Name in the final minutes made things interesting, but solid ball control and some key free-throws by the Idiots sealed the victory as the V.I. held on 41-34. On to the Championship Game for the third straight year!

Dan Knipscher and Tim Byrnes each scored 12 to lead the Idiots, with Byrnes also dishing 4 assists and racking up 3 steals. Greg Harrison pulled down 9 rebounds and added 2 blocks.

The Idiots will take on a familiar foe in the Leprechauns in Wednesday's Final. The Leprechauns advanced when the favored Long Beach team, as could have been expected, completely self-destructed and were kicked out of the league during their semi-final matchup. What a bunch of jokers! The Village Idiots are hoping its faithful fans will come down and support the team in the finals...  And, that you all join us in the post-game celebration!
