Win Streak Ends as the V.I. Come up Short at the Line

The V.I. came out running and led 12-8 after one quarter.  More fast-break points and solid defense helped the Idiots keep the momentum en route to a 23-16 halftime advantage.  With the Idiots up by 4 points late in the 3rd quarter, Who's Next nailed a long three-pointer at the buzzer to trim the lead to 31-30 heading into the 4th. The teams traded points all 4th quarter and after the V.I. failed on several attempts to win the game, the teams headed to overtime tied at 41. 

In overtime, the same continued as the Idiots missed on several free throws and missed out on some good chances to pull away.  Each team scored 5 points in the first overtime so they were forced to play another.  During the second overtime, Who's Next hit their foul shots when it mattered and the V.I. continued to struggle from the line.  The Idiots had one final chance but couldn't get a good shot off and the win streak was over.  Who's Next avenged last year's championship loss with a 52-50 victory.  The Village Idiots fall to 5-1 on the season with one more game left before the playoffs.

Who's to blame for the loss?  Was it the 19 missed free throws?  OR was it because VI Football captain John Walls attended his first game of the season?  OR was it because V.I. guard Freddie Paul is away frolicking in Europe?  Whatever the reason might have been, the Idiots have to take this loss and learn from it.  Better to lose now then in the post-season.

Forward Tom Casal had a team high 17 rebounds and also dropped 15 points while Greg Harrison and Tommy Weber each chipped in 9 points.  "Double D" Dan Dougherty had a season high 6 assists and 5 steals in the loss.
