V.I. Stumbles in First Place Showdown

The Robert Simon School Basement was the scene for the face-off between the leaders of the Skywalker division on Tuesday night. The 4-1 Village Idiots were pitted against their most highly ranked opponent yet in the 5-1 Tighty Whitees squad.

The Idiots opened up with strong defense and combined it with an accurate shooting touch to sprint out to a 9-point lead early in the first half.  The division leaders however did regroup as the half continued, and their patience and team play led to some easy baskets, from which they gathered momentum and rallied to take a 33-30 halftime lead.  The loss of Jay C due to foul trouble was a major blow for the V.I. in their hopes to slow the charging Tightees.

The second half saw more of the same from the first place Whitees as they seemed intent on preserving their spot atop the division.  Big shot after big shot fell for the Tight squad as the V.I. were unable to keep pace.  An ill-timed injury to Pauly Beamer stalled the last of the Idiots’ runs and key free-throw shooting sealed the Whitees victory as the Idiots were handed their second loss of the season 68-53.

With the playoff seedings still far from decided, the Village Idiots are going to need to refocus and take care of business in the coming weeks.
